Ho and Giap stood over a map in the Viet Minh command center. A messenger entered, saluted, and handed the general the envelope containing the photos stolen from the newspaper darkroom by the Vietnamese assistant. As the messenger left, Giap pulled the pictures from the envelope and laid them on the table so Ho could also see them. “Photos from the American delegation in Saigon,” said Giap.

“Yes. Kennedy is here to evaluate the war effort by the French,” said Ho studying the photos. “His recommendation for additional aid will carry great weight with the American people and President Truman.”

Ho picked up one of the photos and studied it more closely. Kennedy was walking down the stairway from the plane, smiling and waving to the crowd. Appearing in the plane’s doorway above him was Granier. “Granier?” said Ho, surprised.

“That’s impossible. He’s dead,” said Giap examining the photo. “My men lied to me. I will see that he is dealt with immediately.”

Ho contemplated the photo and said, “No. He is close to Kennedy. Leave him be. He may still be of use.”
